How to Measure Your Nails for the Perfect Press-On Nail Fit
Ordering custom press-on nails should be exciting—not stressful. One of the most common questions I receive is, "How do I know what size to order?" The good news is that measuring your nails is simple, and taking a few extra minutes to size them correctly will help ensure your custom set fits comfortably and lasts longer.
Why Nail Sizing Matters
Every person's nails are unique. Choosing the correct size helps your press-on nails:
Sit comfortably on your natural nail
Look more natural
Stay on longer
Reduce lifting around the edges
At Boum Boom, each custom set is made specifically for you, so accurate measurements are one of the most important parts of the ordering process.
Option 1: Use a Sizing Kit
The easiest and most accurate way to determine your size is by using one of our sizing kits.
Each kit includes numbered sample nails that you can test on each finger. Once you've found the best fit, simply record the number for each finger and submit your sizes when placing your custom order.
Example:
Left Hand: 2 • 5 • 4 • 6 • 9
Right Hand: 2 • 5 • 4 • 6 • 9
Option 2: Measure with Tape
If you don't have a sizing kit yet, you can measure your nails at home.
Place a small piece of clear tape across the widest part of your natural nail.
Mark both edges of your nail with a pen.
Remove the tape.
Measure the distance between the marks using a ruler that measures in millimeters.
Repeat for each finger.
Write down each measurement so you can compare it with our sizing guide.
Between Two Sizes?
If you're ever between sizes, choose the larger size. A slightly larger press-on nail can usually be filed down for a perfect fit, while one that's too small won't fully cover your natural nail.
Tips for the Best Fit
Measure both hands—your nails aren't always identical.
Measure before trimming your nails too short.
Double-check your measurements before placing your order.

But What About The Coin Method?
Why Boum Boom Doesn't Use the Coin Method
If you've shopped for custom press-on nails before, you've probably heard of the coin method for sizing. In fact, when I first started my journey as a nail artist, I used it too. Over time, however, I realized it wasn't the most reliable way to ensure my customers received the best possible fit.
Here are a few reasons why Boum Boom no longer uses the coin method:
1. Photos Can Be Inconsistent
Even with detailed instructions and example photos, it can be difficult to capture an image that's accurate for sizing. Lighting, camera angle, image clarity, and finger placement all affect how wide your nails appear in a photo, making it easy to misjudge the correct size.
2. It Creates Unnecessary Back-and-Forth
I often received photos that didn't provide the information I needed, which meant asking customers to retake and resend images. That process could become frustrating for both of us and delay the start of your custom order.
3. Comfort Matters Just as Much as Size
A photo can help estimate nail width, but it can't tell you how a nail will actually feel on your finger. That's why I recommend using a sizing kit whenever possible. It allows you to try each size before ordering, ensuring your custom set not only fits well but also feels comfortable to wear.
Every nail artist has their own preferred sizing method, and many create beautiful work using the coin method. This isn't meant to criticize those artists—it's simply a method I've chosen to move away from because I want to provide the most accurate and consistent sizing experience possible for Boum Boom customers.
Instead of using the coin method, I recommend measuring your nails with a flexible measuring tape or ordering one of our plain or painted sizing kits. Taking a few extra minutes to find your perfect fit helps ensure your custom nails look beautiful, feel comfortable, and are ready to wear with confidence.
